Beyond the Margins and Mainstream: Bayard Rustin’s Strategic Nonviolent Activism

You’re invited to a pizza dinner followed by "Beyond the Margins and Mainstream: Bayard Rustin’s Strategic Nonviolent Activism" on Saturday, June 10 from 5:30 to 7 pm at West Chester Friends Meeting.

Bayard Rustin was a Quaker pacifist; a practitioner and teacher of civil disobedience and non-violence; writer; political organizer; political strategist; socialist; anti-Communist; political theoretician; professional singer; openly gay man and a gay rights organizer. Guest lecturer Margaret Chisholm will speak about Rustin’s extraordinary legacy as a political activist committed to the principles of civil disobedience and non-violence. Join us as we learn about Rustin’s critical role in the social justice movements spawned during the last half of the 20th century.
Margaret Chisholm (A.B. University of Pennsylvania; J.D. Harvard Law School; M.L.S. Southern Connecticut State University) was Lecturer in Legal Research and Public Services Librarian at Yale Law School from 1981-2016. She has curated, designed and executed a number of exhibits on topics related to women’s rights, women’s history, civil rights, and human rights, and organized films and/or panels of expert discussants related to exhibits. Chisholm continues to be engaged in public speaking on topics related to women’s rights, civil rights, and international human rights (including Bayard Rustin) by invitation, in the U.S. and Canada.
