Memphis Friends Meeting - Visitors Are Welcome

News & Announcements

At the April 16 meeting for learning, Memphis Friends were joined by Stephanie's friend, Vlad, who lives inĀ Kyiv and who has been seeking ways to offer support to his fellow Ukranians and to build a future of peace and justice. The conversation was a time of reflection on the responsibilities and perhaps the limitations of the historic Quaker peace testimony. A challenging query offered was how to respond nonviolently when there is a clear aggressor and when there has been a violent invasion.

One of the messages shared at the 12/18 meeting for worship was about a grandchild's memorization of Gandhi's words for a holiday performance:

I offer you peace

I offer you love

I offer you friendship

I see your beauty

I hear your need

I feel your feelings

There is no way to peace,
Peace is the way.

The Clerk's opening passage for the 06/26 worship was simple but spoke deeply to Memphis Friends. One Friend called the online meeting a gathered meeting. Friends worshipping in the meeting house backyard joined online Friends at the end of the hour for joys, concerns and announcements, and it was clear that for backyard worshippers the hour had been a powerful one as well.

At the 06/05 meeting for worship, the passage shared was from the beginning of the 1660 letter to King Charles II, which is widely considered the seminal text of Friends' Peace Testimony:

Context for the letter is offered in a 2008 Friends Journal article by Paul Buckley:

Recently Jean posted in our FB group the video of Yusuf/Cat Stevens singing along to his new book Peace Train. And now the book has been donated to the First Day School collection, in memory of Jeanne's sister. Remember that you can check out First Day School books by logging them in the checkout book on the desk in the meetinghouse library.
