Joanne's meeting for learning on global warming and climate change drew from the recent UofM physics lecture and several NOVA programs Joanne uses in her classes:
Karen and Mike Minnis joined Memphis Friends for the meeting for learning on 4/23. The couple have founded and operate a suite of businesses in Orange Mound that focus on nutrition, health, community building and job training. Volunteers are welcome. Many Friends expressed interest in a tour of the gardens to learn more and to identify ways to volunteer:
On 12/18 Shahin led Friends in a spirited meeting for learning on the stewardship testimony. Friends spoke of the testimony as the "multiplier" within S-P-I-C-E-S (the traditional Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality/Equity, and Stewardship), and of all the many meanings of stewardship for Quakers (for example, stewardship of financial resources, but also stewardship of our planet and the energies and gifts of individuals).
At the 03/27 meeting for learning, David - who is a retired economist currently serving as our Meeting's Treasurer - led Memphis Friends to explore several queries related to Quakerism and Investment:
Why do we save money and what do we do with it?
Is it possible to be ethical in process of saving and investing for the future?
Are Quakers allowed to earn interest and profits from labor not their own?
Chuck Fager emailed the meeting recently to recommend the recently re-released book Goatwalking, available from Amazon.
and hard work! Quakers came together in August to tend to the meetinghouse gardens and thresh how the meetinghouse grounds can be a testimony of our beliefs. A second workday in August was postponed because not all needed supplies had been gathered. Look for more info soon about the rescheduled time.
