Joy Ganyo, long-time member of Cannon Valley Friends Meeting, passed away peacefully at the Benedictine Community in Northfield on April 27, 2021 at the age of 90. Although Joy had specified that she wished to be cremated, there were no instructions as to what should be done with her ashes.

After tracking down information on the internet and making a number of calls, Cara Rodriguez, a former student and life-long friend of Joy’s, discovered that Joy’s parents, Levi and Marie Ganyo, were buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Warroad, MN. Cara then worked with the funeral home and the cemetery in Warroad to obtain permission to have Joy’s ashes buried alongside her parents.

With the support of Mary Huiskes (Joy’s caregiver) and Joy’s family, the detective work of Cara Rodriguez, and the encouragement of Cannon Valley Friends Meeting, three members of the meeting (Linne Jensen, Cindy Robinson, and Vicki Glasgow) decided to embark on what one CVFM member has described as a pilgrimage. The journey began on Friday morning, August 27, 2021, with the goal of accompanying Joy’s ashes to her final resting place in Warroad, MN.
