Links related to fracking lecture at Dickinson College

This was a succinct lecture that brought home some of the reasons why fracking is not a good idea for environmental reasons - the reality of leaking wells and the release of methane into the environment.  Here are some related websites.  The first is the organization that the lecturer, Anthony Ingraffea, an emeritus chaired professor at Cornell, was presdient of.  The second is to Fractracker.

What Ingraffea didn't cover were the economic reasons for fracking.  Also, while he made it clear that methane is terrible in terms of global warming, it wasn't clear how much of the overall problem from carbon gases in the atmosphere is due to methane.  A quick scan of the internet indicates that CO2 was about 200x more prevalent in the atmosphere but methane accounted for conservatively about 28% of the problem with global warming, before widespread fracking, a not insignificant number, and likely to increase with fracking, which according to Ingraffea has surpassed agriculture as the number one source of methane.

Here is the information on the lecture:

Shale Gas and Oil Development: Latest Evidence on Leaky Wells, Methane Emissions and Energy Policy

Anthony Ingraffea, Cornell University, will discuss the myths and realities concerning shale gas and oil development.

Anthony Ingraffea, Cornell University, will discuss the myths and realities concerning large-scale development of unconventional natural gas/oil resources in shale deposits on both a local and global scale. This program is sponsored by The Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by the Center for Sustainability Education, Department of Environmental Studies, Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) and the Churchill Fund.
