Evanston Friends Meeting Launches Folk Concert Series May 3

Mark Dvorak at Evanston Friends Meeting on May 3, 2019

Evanston Friends Meeting, 1010 Greenleaf Street will present Chicago’s “official troubadour” Mark Dvorak in a special concert honoring America’s folk icon, songwriter and activist Pete Seeger, on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 pm.

“We’ve been talking about presenting some concerts at the Friends Meeting for sometime,” said Margaret Nelson, who is a member and also a singer songwriter. “When our plans finally came together we were elated that our inaugural concert fell right on Pete Seeger’s 100th birthday. How lucky is that?”

“Immediately I put in a call to Mark. We’ve been crisscrossing each others’ musical paths for something like thirty-five years and I thought, ‘He’d be perfect.’”

Dvorak, who performed with Seeger on a handful of occasions, has followed in his footsteps as a musician, songwriter, educator and community builder. Dvorak toured for six years with WeaverMania! LIVE performing Seeger’s role as singer, storyteller and banjo player.

“Thousands and thousands of people over the years have taken up the banjo, the guitar and began opening their ears to the world of music because of Pete,” said the singer.

“He taught us how to use music to grow our communities and celebrate our heritage. He also demonstrated over many decades the importance of using art and song to help build a more just and peaceful world.”

All ages are welcome. A donation of $10 - $15 is suggested. For more information phone 847-864-8511 or check out our Facebook Page.
