Miami Friends Meeting
Welcome to Miami Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, known to most people as Quakers. Our faith and practices are based on the belief that every person has a divine spark, often called the Inner Light, which is available to guide us towards doing what is right. It is this basic belief that leads us to oppose war and to work actively for peace and justice.
In practice, we sit in silence in our meeting for worship until someone feels certain they have been given a divine message meant to be shared with everyone present. In a Friends meeting, there may be a wide range of ideas about the nature of divinity, names used, and sources of inspiration, including but not exclusively the Bible, the writings of George Fox, the man who started Quakerism, and other sacred texts and inspired contemporary writings.
Miami Friends Meeting is currently having "hybrid" meetings for worship, with some people present in the meeting room and others online using Zoom. Visitors who are vaccinated are welcome to attend in person, using masks and observing social distancing. If you would like to attend on Zoom, you can email a request for the meeting invitation to info@miamifriends.org.

Miami Friends Meeting hosted the summer camp graduation party of Madre Tierra Kids, a program organized by the American Friends Service Committee, funded by the Alianza Americas and Miami Friends. The children, refugees from Central America, went on field trips and did activities which focused on cultural pride, artistic traditions, and empowerment.
Submitted by Kathy Hersh:
70 organizations, ranging from faith communities to the Florida PTA signed on to the League of Women Voters of Florida's letter asking for gun control legislation without delay from the Fla legislature. The response has been so overwhelming they are setting up a statewide steering committee. They will keep all the groups informed on what collective action to take next.

Kathy Hersh signed on to a letter from the Florida League of Women's Voters to the governor, requesting state gun control legislation, as the clerk of Miami Friends Meeting.
Emily Wirzba, from Friends National Committee on Legislation, and her colleague Jose Aguto, accompanied members of Miami Friends Meeting and other participants from last Sunday's lobbying workshop to meetings with staff at the offices of Rep. Mario Diaz Balart and Rep. Carlos Curbelo yesterday (6-15-16). Emily was "really impressed" in the tone and manner in which we conveyed our personal concerns and related to the staffers. Positive and strong connections were made, specially in Rep. Curbelo's office. Persistence, Emily reminded us in the workshop, is the name of the game.
