Together we nurture the spiritual vitality of Friends

Plainfield Friends Meeting (Quakers)

Welcome to Meeting

We are a group of seekers who share worship every Sunday in our beautiful, secluded, meetinghouse. Some of us were raised Quaker, others came to Quakerism later in life. Common to all is a curiosity about how the divine spirit is moving among us and others, a desire and practice of uncovering that movement in a spirit of holy worship, and a committment to kindly and patiently support others in their development of their spiritual life. We all have different reasons for coming to worship, but we recognize that we receive something special when we share the worship experience together.

Worship is held for an hour in expectant silence. As led, members may give ministry based on their own experience. There are many forms of this ministry. Sometimes the most powerful ministry is the ministry that is not spoken and the peace and serenity that can accompany a centered, silent, worship experience is the reason that many of us come back. We invite everyone to come experience our form of worship. Childcare is provided, with children accompanying parents to begin worship but leaving after a short period.

"Worship is the response of the human spirit to the presence of the divine and eternal, to the God who first seeks us. The sense of wonder and awe of the finite before the infinite leads naturally to thanksgiving and adoration.

Silent worship and the spoken word are both parts of Quaker ministry. The ministry of silence demands the faithful activity of every member in the meeting. As, together, we enter the depths of a living silence, the stillness of God, we find one another in ‘the things that are eternal’, upholding and strengthening one another."

What's New

Halleluiah!  It’s been more than a year since we’ve gathered for meeting for worship in our lovely meetinghouse on the banks of the Winooski River, and we are excited to open up again for in-person worship starting this coming Sunday, May 23rd, at 10:30 AM.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to worship virtually via Zoom since April 2020, and will be continuing to offer remote worship to all at 8:30 AM, starting this Sunday.  All are welcome to attend either or both of our worship times together.

Worship is valuable and meant for all community members no matter their age; however, for those who wish, we offer a separate Sunday School program for attenders under the age of 12.

Public

Quaker worship is experienced as a silent collective meditation, a time for individuals to sit in waiting worship, and to be open to the movement of the spirit among the congregation's members.
