Yellow Springs Friends Meeting

Welcome to the Yellow Springs Friends Meeting (Quaker)

Yellow Springs Friends Meeting is a welcoming faith community within the Quaker tradition. We believe that there is “that of God in everyone” and that every person has the capacity to experience divine presence and guidance.

Accordingly, our tradition upholds ideals of equality and peace. These spiritually based ideals have historically inspired, and continue to lead Friends to work toward building a world free of war and defined by social justice for all. We also embrace principles of simplicity, integrity and community, the manifestations of which include a concern for ecological sustainability.

The experience of worshipping together remains the center of our community life and the source for our shared activities in the world. Our worship is conducted in the traditional “unprogrammed” manner of early Friends – we have no clergy, liturgy or prepared music. In our “silent” worship, where anyone may share as led, we seek a sense of unity with the divine and each other that sustains and defines us.

Attending Yellow Springs Friends Meeting

Entering Meeting for Worship: You may find Friends already gathered and singing if you enter the Meetinghouse before 11:15. All are welcome to join in hymn singing from 10:50 to 11:15 on Sunday mornings. If you arrive after Meeting has started, please wait until 11:30 to enter quietly and find a seat. If anyone is offering a message at the moment, please wait until he or she has finished speaking before taking a seat.

Children and Worship: Children typically attend worship for the first 15 minutes. Child care is provided for the remainder of Meeting, but some older children and teens choose to stay for the full hour.

After Worship: Guests are invited to introduce themselves at the rise (close) of Meeting, to sign our guest book, and to join us for fellowship and refreshments at noon.

Early Meeting for Worship: Some Friends prefer to worship at 8:30 on Sunday mornings. This Meeting tends to be especially quiet, and is much smaller than the 11:15 Meeting. All are welcome.

Religious Education: Friends refer to Sunday School as “First Day School,” and programs for children and adults are held at 10:00, September through May. Our children’s First Day School program currently incorporates activities from the Godly Play Foundation.

For up-to-date information about upcoming adult and children's First Day School, click the "News" tab above. More information about services can be found in the Quakershaker Archives, under the "Resources" tab.
