Tempesta’s own New World Recorders serve up Henry Purcell’s richly varied contributions to the intensely contrapuntal world of the English consort fantasia. Written during the summer of 1680, Purcell’s fifteen Fantasias have survived as a manuscript copy found in the British Museum. This unique collection of pieces can perhaps only be compared to Bach’s Musical Offering and Art of Fugue, which were performed by the New World Recorders on our series last season.
