Don Smith will be leading two discussion series beginning in September at the Beltram Peace Center (1236 NW 18th Ave).

Beginning Wednesday, September 9 at 7 pm:  The New Jim Crow

The first (a repeat of one initiated by Shawna Doran at the Wilhelmina Johnson Center last fall) will be based on Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. It will begin on Wednesday, September 9 (7pm) and continue for at least six successive Wednesdays, covering one chapter per week. The first meeting will cover the Foreword, Preface and Introduction. Alexander is an associate professor of law at Ohio State University.

Beginning Saturday, September 12 at 10 am:  The Muslim Jesus

The second series will devote 4-6 sessions to a book titled The Muslim Jesus, edited by Tarif Khalidi. It will meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings of each month, starting on September 12. Its purpose is to foster interfaith dialogue by comparing the image of Jesus that developed in the Islamic world after Muhammad’s death with the picture of Jesus in the Gospels.
