Spring 2021 NYM Interim Session March 11-14, 2021

There will be sessions Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning (including worship) and early afternoon. We’ll have a full agenda of important work to do!

Here are some highlights of the issues we’ll cover:

  • Doctrine of Discovery -- what are NYM Meetings and Worship Groups doing to educate themselves? How do we envision our path forward as a YM in relation to the Doctrine and in terms of building “right relationship” with Native peoples? [The DoD was a papal bull that gave European Christians the right to claim lands around the world and subjugate the people living on them. It is still the foundation of US law relating to Native Americans. Faith communities have been asked by Native Americans to renounce the Doctrine as one step in a long process of change.]
  • Anti-racism and Finance -- how does our use of time and money reflect our values and commitments, particularly our commitment to becoming an anti-racist faith community? How should we prioritize our donations to Friends’ organizations? We’ll be working with data gathered from our committees, Reps, and recipients of our donations.
  • Audit Recommendations -- the Audit Committee recommends some new practices and procedures, including hiring an accountant for periodic checks of our books.
  • Nimble Responders -- an ad hoc committee recommends a way for us to have a more active, timely, public presence in the world: a new committee to vet requests from the wider world to sign onto initiatives, letters, and public statements as a yearly meeting -- always in keeping with our testimonies, beliefs, and priorities.
