Carolina Friends School invites Durham Friends . . .

... to a reception for Shan Cretin, General Secretary, American Friends Service Committee on Thursday Evening, January 30th.  Fostering youth leadership for social change will be the focus of remarks by Shan, who leads this national Quaker organization that works to build peace with justice at home and abroad.

During her visit to the school, Shan will share reflections on the recent World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Warsaw, Poland.  In October 2013, Shan led an AFSC delegation that included 19 youth from AFSC programs in Zimbabwe, Burundi, Indonesia, Cambodia, Israel, Palestine and six cities from across the U.S.  “The AFSC youth who gathered in Warsaw came from many different cultures, religions, and circumstances but they share a deep commitment to bringing peace and justice to their communities,” Shan said.

In 1947, AFSC was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, for its work on behalf of all Quakers.  For more on AFSC’s work for justice and peace, visit www.afsc.org and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace and humanitarian service.

Its work is based on the belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.
