The City of Frederick passed a resolution, supported by Frederick Friends Meeting, that asks the federal government to move toward nuclear disarmament.

Frederick Friends Meeting is a supporter of Back from the Brink, a nationwide campaign that works to build grassroots momentum for federal action on nuclear disarmament. One step toward that goal is to urge local and state governments to pass resolutions asking the federal government to move toward nuclear disarmament. .

Members of our Meeting and others in Prevent Nuclear War Maryland were successful in urging the Mayor of Frederick to bring a resolution to the Board of Aldermen, and it was passed unanimously on August 18.

By passing this resolution, Frederick joins city, county, and state governments around the country in asking the federal government to renounce the use of nuclear weapons as a first-strike option. The resolution also opposes the sole authority of any president to launch a nuclear attack. It calls for the federal government to take U.S. nuclear weapons off “hair trigger” alert, cancel a plan to replace the country’s nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons, and actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
