Friends General Conference

Nurturing faith and Quaker practice

Cannon Valley Friends Meeting

Cannon Valley Friends Meeting is an unprogrammed meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers.  We are located in Northfield, MN, about 35 miles south of Minneapolis/St. Paul.

What's New

From the Judeo-Christian tradition the prophet Micah asks and answers “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Jesus distilled it to “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Members of Cannon Valley Friends Meeting met with members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northfield on July 20, 2016 to discuss ways in which we could begin to address racism in our local communities.  Shock, outrage, and grief triggered by the recent shootings of Philando Castille in Minnesota and other black men around the country by police officers led us to take some action in response to these events.

Wren sings and scolds

until her brood fledges,

So ordered, bound

to earth we walk away.

--Poem by Sam Johnson

Eleanor Zelliot, award-winning author, researcher, social justice activist, educator, Professor Emerita of Carleton College, devoted Quaker, and beloved member of Cannon Valley Friends Meeting, died on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at the age of 89.  A Memorial Meeting for Worship in the manner of Friends was held to honor and share memories of Eleanor on Saturday, June 18th, at the Cannon Valley Friends Meeting House (512 Washington St., Northfield).  The Memorial Service was followed with refreshments and light food.

You might have felt it. The hateful rhetoric of candidates in this election year affects us all, fostering a climate of fear. We believe that we can and must call out the irresponsible language that demonizes people of particular faiths and backgrounds. To shift the narrative, Friends Committee on National Legislation, a Quaker non-profit lobbying group, is launching #LoveThyNeighbor to encourage positive rhetoric and highlight the value we place on one another. Please join us and show the power of love to overcome fear and hatred.

Quakers talk about "following our leadings."  But what is a leading?  What does it feel like to have one?

QuakerSpeak interviews are personal and intimate.  The purpose is to give viewers worldwide an experience that is entertaining, informative, inspiring, challenging, inviting, unifying and collaborative.
